Overview

Herbal Medicine on scale symposium is conducted based on the aims of nourishing the pharmacists on the science of herbal medicine which use is increasing globally everyday. The symposium consists of 6 different lectures conducted by Ministry officers, Pharmaceutical Botany professors and herbalists discussing the Science of Medicinal plants from various aspects titled as follows: New Regulations of herbal & complementary medicines in UAE, Quality and Safety of herbal medicine, The attitude of Saudi population towards using herbal medicine, History of herbal medicines, Drug-Herb interactions and herbal medicinal drug development.


Learning Objectives:

 
To refresh the already existing knowledge of pharmacists regarding herbal medicines.
To provide information regarding the MOH regulations of herbal and complementary medicine in UAE.
To provide an overview of the most used herbs in traditional medicine in UAE and their pharmaceutical uses and properties.
To assist the pharmacists in regards of how, when and why they should dispense those medicines to the patients and what advices and notes they should know.
To help pharmacists distinguish adverse effects caused by herbal medicine and their common interactions with other conventional drugs, prophylaxis and solutions.
6. To discuss openly the very well known available herbal medicines, highlight truths and discover Myths.
7. To get a general knowledge about herbal medicines drug development and the process by which such drugs are produced.
8. To arm the Pharmacists with all the information needed so that they become able to face the daily requests and questions made by their patients in the best pharmaceutical manner possible.
Building channels of communication between governmental agencies concerned in the region.

Target Audience

The target audiences for the Symposium are the licensed healthcare professionals such as the pharmacists, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals who are interested to know about herbal medicines. In addition, pharmacy students, medical and health oriented graduate students are also welcomed.

Speakers Biography

Dr. Tariq Rida Mohamed Osman is currently working as the Unit Head of Complementary Medicines at the Registration & Drug Control Dept. - M.O.H., UAE. He worked also as Head of Pharmacy Section at M.O.H. - Sultanate of Oman. He participated in WHO Regional Workshops and Seminars. He was a Speaker in many local, regional and international Conferences of Natural Products & Traditional Medicines. He is a WHO Expert for Short Term Consultancy: for promotion of the WHO System for Regulation of Traditional Herbal Medicine in the countries of East Mediterranean Region.
Dr. Mohammad Kamil is an Associate Professor, Head & Research Coordinator at Zayed Herbal Centre. He is a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry in U.K. He was In charge of the Quality Control Lab at MOH, India for 15 years. He has total research experience of 38 years and has got 224 publications. He has received many awards such as the Common Wealth Award and the Hakim Ajmal Khan Shield (For best paper presentation). He chaired more than 18 scientific sessions at International Conferences and he was also invited for more than 20 lectures.
Dr. Yousif Abdu Asiri is the Dean of the College of pharmacy and an Associate Professor of Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific in California. He is a consultant to Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA). He is also a member of several committees in the College of Pharmacy, the University, and outside of the University. He is a referee for several pharmaceutical and medical journals nationally and internationally. He is a frequent speaker at pharmacy meetings and is considered a pharmacy futurist.
Dr. Sulaiman El sharif is a Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology as well as the Acting Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Sharjah. He got his PhD from Nottingham, UK in 1980. He was the Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy in Libya from 1996 to 1999. He was also Dean, of Research & Graduate Studies at Ajman University He is a member in a number of international organizations such as The European Drug Utilization Research Group. He participated in the publishing of many books and has got articles in many international journals. He participated in many international conferences as well.

Dr. Elhadi  Noureldayem  Mahmoud is an Assistant Professor of  Pharmacognosy and  Phytochemistry at the College of Pharmacy – Ajman University. He got his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry - phytochemistry from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom in 1985.. He worked as the Head of Pharmacognosy Department at the Universities of Khartoum and San'aa. He has got publications in many International and Local Journals. He has got an ongoing Research about Medicinal Plants in UAE.

Dr. R. K Rao is currently the business Head of Himalaya company. He is responsible for the company’s pharmaceutical business in MENA region. He looks after the Strategic business expansions, Business development in new markets as well as the Regulatory affairs and product registration. His Career Spans over 17 years, with all round expertise in International Marketing. He had successfully launched the company and a wide range of Phytopharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals in MENA region.

Dr. Motasim Habibullah Al-Hassan is a Senior Consultant Physician. He specialized in gastroenterology and nephrology in Germany. He was a Member of the Traditional Medicine Committee of G.C.C. Countries from 1988-2003. He was also Head of Research  group for Clinical Evaluation of Herbal Medicines, U.A.E 1996-2000. He worked as Deputy Chief Physician in Germany from 1974 to 1977. He was also Consultant Physician & Medical Advisor for Arab Embassies and Communities in Bonn, Germany,1977-87. He was Initiator & Pioneer of the School of Traditional Medicine in the U.A.E from 1988-2003. he worked also as General Director (Consultant Physician & Herbalist), Zayed Complex for Herbal Research and Traditional Medicine, Abu Dhabi-U.A.E. 1996 – 2000. He is interested in the Involvement in research activities in various fields of complementary medicine and their clinical evaluation as well as Folklore Medicine – Heritage. He lectured and Chaired several working groups on national level & international meetings. He also received several awards for efforts done in the field of Traditional Medicine (Awarded professorship from Beijing Academy of Sciences).

Dr. Marwa Samir Donia is currently an Assistant Professor of Pharmacognosy at the College of Pharmacy, University of Sharjah. She took her PhD in 2005 in Natural Products Chemistry from University of Mississippi, USA.  She worked as research assistant in the “National Institution of Drug Control and Research" as well as an Assistant Teacher in the Department of Pharmacognosy, Suez Canal University, Egypt. She is a Member of the American Society of Pharmacognosy. She participated in many international workshops and was awarded the best presentation in Natural Products Research for the Natural Products Research Symposium. She has also got many peer reviewed publications in international journals.
