Overview

Mental Health, Abuse of Narcotic and Sedative Drugs

The field of mental health has made many advances, particularly since 1980. These developments include an increased understanding of the brain's function and the development of effective new medications.

Mental, or psychiatric, illnesses are a major public health concern. They adversely affect functioning, productivity and the overall quality of life. They cut across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines to affect a significant proportion of communities worldwide.

In recent years, the over-prescription of psychiatric drugs has become the subject of frequent public debate. On the other hand, substance-use disorders are quite common and occur in all segments of society. They can lead to accidents, violent crime, and major problems in school and at work. They can cause or complicate various medical and psychiatric illnesses. Substance abuse is defined as a maladaptive pattern of use indicated by continued use despite persistent or recurrent social, occupational, psychological, or physical problems caused or exacerbated by the use of the substance. The first steps of treatment of substance abuse involve developing insight, acknowledging the problem, and wanting to change. There are various psychosocial interventions, and medications that can help lead to successful recovery for the majority of those with substance use disorders.
